Description
Why is the prostate examined with a magnetic camera?
Prostate cancer is Sweden's most common form of cancer.
It is the most common form of cancer among men and it can take a long time before the cancerous tumor in the prostate puts so much pressure on the urethra that it affects urination. Before this stage, one is usually symptom-free. Thus, the disease is usually not detected until it is far advanced. Prostate cancer leads to elevated values of the protein PSA.
What is PSA?
PSA is a protein that is formed in the prostate gland and that occurs in high levels in the seminal fluid. The protein usually occurs in small amounts in the blood. The PSA value in the blood increases with increasing age and with various prostate diseases. Most often, the PSA test (blood test) is used in combination with ultrasound to detect prostate cancer.
Regular PSA tests provide good opportunities to detect prostate cancer early, but it can lead to unnecessary treatment. Many have a cancerous tumor that grows slowly and never develops into a serious disease. The unnecessary treatment can affect the quality of life. In addition, cancer treatment can result in side effects such as problems with urinary leakage and mental illness.
Why MRI scan, PSA test not enough?
Through MR-Prostate, doctors can clearly map whether there is a change. Based on images, precise tissue samples can be taken to investigate suspicious changes. This means that the suspected tumor can be located and more targeted tissue samples can be taken.
Relying only on PSA tests and ultrasound can lead to a lot of unwarranted tissue samples. In recent times, large well-conducted studies have shown that magnetic camera examination before possible tissue samples is both better for the patient and saves resources for the healthcare system.
MR technology together with the PSA test is a more reliable and safe method for detecting and mapping prostate cancer. When suspicious changes are detected, our doctors send a referral to a urologist who investigates your state of health.
Preparations
If you have metal splinters, a pacemaker, an insulin pump or other electronic equipment in your body, you cannot be examined with a magnetic camera. Metal that is not magnetic, on the other hand, does not pose an obstacle for magnetic camera examination.
Survey results
Your results are reviewed by x-ray specialists and analyzed and compiled by specialist doctors in an individual written report that is sent to you within 7-10 working days.
